The Storm 136th day 05-16

The grocery store was almost empty…”No wonder”, Alice thought...”regular” people don’t shop that late at night.  She was slowly walking through different departments, picking up random items and placing them into the small cart. She had decided to cook a nice dinner for her roommate Megan …as a thank you gesture for all of her help. Alice was a descent cook with a bigger imagination then collection of recipes. As a matter of fact, she would never cook the same dish accordingly to the exact recipe…She experimented until the perfect balance of taste and texture was born …. in other words…until she liked it. Alice was determined to make it “her way” … long time ago, she realized  it was much better to create then duplicate… at the end, making her feel alive…. As she checked the content of her grocery cart…she knew there was something missing…chicken, bacon, tomatoes, basil and garlic… fresh alfredo sauce…pasta…One more item…asparagus !…Now it was  ready.

“Can I help you find something?” the young man working at the store asked. She smiled and shook her head, trying not to laugh.

“No, I am fine…Thank you” she said, starting to walk away. Alice was so preoccupied with shopping for a dinner, that she must have looked pretty silly…mumbling under her nose, and having “concentrated meet puzzled” expression on her face.

“Have a wonderful evening…I mean night…no…the rest of the day…” the voice of the young man followed her, breaking the sleepy silence all around them. Alice turned around and laughed…

“I will…whatever…it will be…I guess at this time… too…” she said in a casual and relaxed way.

The young man of about twenty was watching her intensely.

“Late night shopping..? It’s nice …not many people…quiet at night…” he stated, showing a big grin brightening his features.

“Yes…very convenient …no lines…Goodnight ” she responded politely, smiled at him and started to walk away.

“Goodnight” she heard behind her, but didn’t respond or turn around this time.

“He was good looking and charming…” She made a point of noticing…maybe one day she will be ready for a longer conversation…

As she walked outside, wind started to pick up a little, giving a refreshing breeze…She breathed in deeply…relaxing…. Alice unlocked her car and was about to put in the bag full of groceries, when she heard a loud voice coming from behind…slightly to the left...

“How many times did I tell you to do it right…can’t you do anything right…?”  Alice turned around searching for the source of it. There was a tall woman talking loudly in the aggravated tone of the voice. Next to her was a young boy of about twelve or thirteen…looking at the ground.

“That’s not what I told you to do!! Get in the car …now!!!...No, No!!!...One thing I ask you “ she was shouting.

Alice put down the grocery bag and was watching them with a concentration, feeling her heart beat faster and faster…She couldn’t believe the scene, unfolding before her eyes…The woman was abusive, aggressive and very distressed…She noticed Alice …standing motionless in the back of her car …and listening to her…

“I will do it myself” the women kept on shouting as she grabbed the empty grocery car and started pushing it toward the place of return. Someone was coming this way too, pushing a cart with groceries. It was an older man …with a fixed look on the tall woman…  They exchanged the concern looks…he stopped and watched…

The woman was coming back toward her car, shouting obscenities toward a boy…he remained still…his head hanging down … She opened the door to the car, started the engine and started to drive off …leaving a boy in the parking lot…He turned around …looking for a moment into their direction and then started to run…following her…The brake lights came on and the car came to a stop… for a second and then, started to drive away …and stopped again…

Alice and the other man started to walk toward the car …at exactly the same moment…

“Hello…! “ Alice raised her voice and started to walk faster.

“Wait!!!” she cried out.  The boy noticed them and stopped following the car… he was standing in the middle of the parking lot…looking as if he was crying…The car stopped.

“Are you all right? What’s your name” Alice asked without pausing. The boy just looked at her with a scary expression.

“Is this your mother?’ the man asked. Boy nodded without uttering a single word. They heard the sound of the car door being open and her abrasive voice …

“I told you to get in the car! It’s not your business!!!” she exclaimed, looking angry.

“But you are wrong…it is our business “the man said in a calm voice.

“You can’t treat your son this way…it’s abusive!!!” Alice exclaimed…looking into her eyes. Her heart was beating very fast… She was feeling outraged …but tried to remain calm…

“You can’t tell me what to do…it’s my child!!!” woman said loudly, taking a step toward them. Alice watched her move closer and instinctively stepped away…” She is not stable…” Alice reflected…expecting …anything….

“If you are not going to come down…I will call the police...” the man pronounced each word very slowly… Woman looked at the man, then walked toward her son, opened the door to the car ...pushed the boy in and closed it.  She walked to her side of the car with the triumphant look and opened the door…

“He is my son!!!” she shouted

Alice looked at her license plate …and said it out loud…trying to remember …

The women drove off…Alice and other man were left behind…standing there…with worried looks on their faces…

“I remember her license plate…I will call Children Protective Services...” Alice looked at the man…feeling they didn’t do enough…

“Let me give you my number...” The man offered… “I will testify…”

Alice closed the door to her car….sitting there for a moment and not moving at all. She was holding in her right hand a piece of paper containing  an information on woman’s license plate and the man’s phone number….watching it move as her hands started to shake….

To be continued…

The Little Prince

"People where you live," the little prince said, "grow five thousand roses in one garden... yet they don't find what they're looking for..."

"They don't find it," I answered.

"And yet what they're looking for could be found in a single rose, or a little water..."

"Of course," I answered.

And the little prince added, "But eyes are blind. You have to look with the heart."
