Cake 108th Day 04-18

by Administrator 18. April 2011 03:34

I was born in Poland, spending there all of my childhood years…in the catholic family…so the importance of Easter comes as no surprise. Not only in the religious and spiritual ways but also in the family and social life. Well… we tend to cook and bake… a lot…especially for the important holidays.  I am not doing it in the same way as my grandmothers did…practically preparing for a week with dozens of different pastries and multitude of other dishes…but I do my share of what is considered here as a “feast”. This year, I was positively in the mood for baking…more than usual…something about the simple ingredients like butter, sugar, chocolate, eggs, flour, cheese etc. turning into a sweet treat at the end. The most basic and unassuming , fantastically tasty result of a creative process….I can see how cooking could be a therapy in itself…creating something out of “ nothing” and feeling responsible for that visible change… So many times in our life we put lots of energy and effort to accomplish something…make a change, have an impact…and we don’t see obvious results … But not with cooking or baking…a little work and magically we change the Universe around us for better…if only for a few moments…no long waiting or questionable outcome…good recipe and a pair of hands…Sometime, I wish everything else would be that easy…

Another great therapy’s friend is the gardening. Not long ago at the lunch/girlfriendology meeting (It was lovely, fun and delicious  ... Big Thanks to Jola B.) I had a chance to exchange few words about spring fever of gardening… planning, buying, digging, planting, taking care of….and how much it makes us happy …to see something to take a form, grow , show life…and change into beautiful flower, plant, fruit, vegetable…with our help… Again, making a difference in the world around us, being a part of helping hand, watching the miracle of life…

There are lots of other activities…which make us feel more alive, engaged in the world around, in the simple yet highly visible way… Painting, sculpting, crocheting, needle point, flower arrangements, playing music, writing, dancing….  We feel compelled to create an extension of ourselves, expressing the unique qualities. It’s the conversation between us and everything around …showing our existence through action and its impact. It’s almost as if we were meant to create…sometime in easy and simple ways …and other times in more profound…Leaving our own print for a moment or for the centuries …the difference lies only  in time but not in the intention of touching the world and proclaiming “ I was a living  part of it …”

Today, among other desserts, I made the cake, which is not only easy (no bake…I know, it sounds weird… but it’s absolutely delicious…wafers and chocolate /hazelnut…plus my secret …Kahlua…well not secret anymore lol) but full of memories from my childhood. My grandmother Maria was a great cook and “pischinger” (name of the cake…) is something I will always remember her for and our time together…It will always make me smile, remembering two of us at the kitchen table, divided by our age and life experiences, never less equally attuned to a simple act of mixing cake ingredients, participating in the baking magic…which brought us closer, connecting  through happy, good feel moments full of joy and love…making its way to my heart …She left many imprints of her life…but this one is special…. forever occupying my world of memories.

The Little Prince

"People where you live," the little prince said, "grow five thousand roses in one garden... yet they don't find what they're looking for..."

"They don't find it," I answered.

"And yet what they're looking for could be found in a single rose, or a little water..."

"Of course," I answered.

And the little prince added, "But eyes are blind. You have to look with the heart."
