Joanna - The Ladybug 68th Day 03-09

by Administrator 10. March 2011 02:45

It was a simple, yet beautiful dress… white, with floral lace and bows….her hand with slim, long fingers was moving to the rhythm of her thoughts ...Joanna was curious…she tiptoed toward the desk, anxiously looking at the paper…The long chain of perfectly formed letters was filling up the empty space… The single drop of tear landed in the middle, magnifying few letters and bringing the word “sorry” to the focus. She wiped it gently with her handkerchief, adorn with the image of a small butterfly in the corner…paused for a moment and then started to write again…  Joanna looked closely at the written letter…it started with the words  “Dear Joanna”….she gasped, in surprise…The woman turned her head toward Joanna and looked into her eyes….Joanna felt paralyzed…she knew  those beautifully blue eyes with gold speckles but couldn’t remember from where… They were full of tears and sorrow….

Joanna opened her eyes and saw the picture of a woman … It was the famous painting by Klimt, called “Dancer”. The young woman in the painting was looking at the far distance, surrounded by colorful flowers…with her dress open at the chest … showing perfect posture, grace and dignity, indifferent to her nakedness.

The dream about the woman was becoming more and more real…Joanna could almost smell the delicate scent of the perfume…lily of the valley….she thought.

She was feeling sleepy and tired….” Maybe I am getting sick?”  she wondered.  “Enough of it!”  she decided and got up quickly with the mission on her mind…She needs to get out of the house, go for a walk…move her body…get some oxygen going…. “.  Sophie…?” she called out “  Where are you”… There was a silence in the house…as she was slowly walking, the muted voices from the outside sounded joyous and happy… She heard some laughter and as she opened the door to the porch, Joanna saw her aunt Sophie, grandmother and older gentleman enjoying each other company…absorbed in the lively conversation.

“Joanna…we didn’t want to wake you up…”  aunt Sophie exclaimed. “Do you remember Mr. Ashcroft?” Sophie looked closely at Joanna …asking slowly and savoring the sound of his name… “He owns the little convenience store in the town and always remembers to bring us some “goodies…. “No…no…it’s the other way around…Sophie and Mrs. Blanch are just too good to me…and…. my stomach...”  he gently pated his belly and smiled. “ Yes, I believe I remember you…” Joanna admitted  “and….the delicious rock candy…” she winked at him... They both started laughing… ”Well…I hope I can still bribe you with that candy…” he teased.  Sophie pretended to be in shock  “After all these years …I am learning why she was never hungry after the school…it wouldn’t have anything to do with stopping by your place on her way back..? Would it…?” and Sophie turned her head to the right, letting mischievous smile take over her face.  Mr. Ashcroft was watching Sophie with an admiring look … “Joanna what are your plans for the rest of the day?”  Sophie asked with directness and interest. “I was planning to go for a walk…maybe…or to visit mom…”.   “It’s a good idea...perfect day for it...” her Aunt agreed… “There are flowers in the back …I just cut them this morning…yellow and red tulips…” she pointed to the back of the house. Joanna excused herself, went to get the flowers and came back to the front porch… “Well, I will be going…It was good to see you Mr. Ashcroft “she acknowledge him in a polite manner.  “Miss Joanna, stop anytime….” and he winked at her “still have the same rock candy...” “Maybe I will…hold that thought “Joanna exclaimed with the smile.

The cemetery was on the other side of the railroad track …It will take her about twenty minutes to get there.  She was walking slowly, not in the rush, looking at the sky above her; white puffy clouds reminding her of a cotton candy… the trees and shrubs blooming with colorful flowers, awaken after the winter… Joanna knew this road very well, travelled here on many occasions…When she was  just a child…she would walk from the school , enjoying her time…stopping at the local store, where Mr. Ashcroft would  invite her and asked,  to try a new flavor of her favorite rock candy... She postponed her time to get back home…sometimes the sadness was too overwhelming and she didn’t feel strong enough to fight it on her own…

“Joanna!”….” Joanna!!” …’ Joanna!!!”….she thought someone was calling her …she stopped and looked around…the whistle was getting louder… Suddenly, she felt someone grabbing her by her shoulders and pulling toward the back in a strong and abrupt movement…She felt the hot air rushing by and saw the massive body of the train passing in extremely close distance…  “Are you trying to kill yourself!?”  someone’s voice was shouting… She looked to the back and saw the familiar face of a young man from the morning train trip… Joanna felt weak to her knees….she bend forward, dropping the flowers and holding on to her legs….  “You are safe….everything is all right…” the man’s voice softened and showed concern… Joanna started to breathe deeply…composing herself….she straighten up and gave Christopher a serious look…” Thank you….thank you so much….I ….I didn’t hear it…. “.   “I am glad you are safe….you scared me…” he said, focusing on every word…. He looked at the ground and started to pick up the flowers, Joanna was watching him…unable to move….” Are you going to put these flowers at the cemetery..?” he asked gently and pointed in its direction. “Yes…” Joanna said after a long pause. “Actually ….I was going the same way…let me help you…” he took her arm and started walking….

Joanna saw everything happening…..but she had a feeling, it was on outside of her…as if she was watching a movie…not real…. It took her few more minutes to regain full awareness…

She was walking slowly toward cemetery with Christopher, without a word between them… “Which way?” he asked and she pointed to the left …” Here “she said…stopping in front of her mom’s grave. She took flowers from his hands and carefully placed them on the top. The tears started coming one after another…she couldn’t stop them , even if she wanted…Christopher put his hand around her shoulders and stand quietly by her…

Joanna wiped her eyes with the sleeve of her shirt and said “I am very sorry ….It’s been a very strange day…I am not like that …usually…Thank you again for….” She paused and looked at him “…for saving me…I didn’t see it coming…”  Christopher stepped away and said   “I couldn’t bear to see anything bad happening to you….”

Joanna saw sadness in his blue eyes and…. thought ….she saw it before…..

“Beautiful flowers” he commented, looking at the tulips…. “Yes…they are….my Aunt and Grandma both have a green thumb….she explained.  “Is this your …” he asked…” Yes, It’s my mom “she said quickly… “I am sorry “Christopher exclaimed with sadness.  “I am too….Its been long time ago…still… seems like yesterday…”Joanna said slowly… “I think I will be going…it’s enough for one day” she continued. “Where are you going ?”  Christopher asked   “I don’t know…don’t want to go home ...now…” and  she looked into the distance.  “I know the perfect place….secret spot “ he said and smiled …. Joanna started walking, then she turned around and asked …” Are we going?”  Christopher nodded and followed her.

They were walking in the silence, climbing to the area located above the town…she was concentrating on one and single step at the time…didn’t want to think anymore…still shaking…It was getting a little steep...He extended his hand to offer the help and she took it as something very natural…She felt the warmth and strength of his hand and noticed, it made her feel safe and happy…Finally they made it to the top. They could see the whole town from here…not a large one …but quite lovely looking with beautiful scenery and a peaceful feeling .”That’s my favorite place of all …”  he said  “ When I came here for vacation or to see my dad I would always come up here…and stay for hours…good hiding spot…” he reflected.

Joanna laid down on the thick grass and looked up the sky…”All it takes is the second…not to see it ever again…We should look up more often to the sky…and appreciate its beauty…or to watch the stars at night…twinkling and telling the stories…” .  Christopher was watching her intensely….Joanna felt something touching her hand …she looked and saw the lady bag crawling…She started to count the black spots….one, two, three….

Christopher laid down next to her ….she turned her head toward him and saw his dark blue eyes with golden speckles…they reminded her of….her moonstone pendant…She was wondering, why has she never noticed that before…. smiled and thought about life …how funny it is sometime….one moment you almost get killed and another you are watching the most interesting and beautiful set of the eyes… It’s always full of surprises; you can never assume what is going to happen next….  The ladybug was crawling onto her arm…slightly tickling…Joanna gave a short laugh and said with a smile  “You are supposed to bring luck….but I think, you already did…..”

To be continued…..

The Little Prince

"People where you live," the little prince said, "grow five thousand roses in one garden... yet they don't find what they're looking for..."

"They don't find it," I answered.

"And yet what they're looking for could be found in a single rose, or a little water..."

"Of course," I answered.

And the little prince added, "But eyes are blind. You have to look with the heart."
