Joanna - The Moonstone 67th Day 03-08

by Administrator 9. March 2011 02:41

The Moonstone pendant was giving a mysterious glow. Joanna smiled at her reflection in the mirror and reached with both hands for the small gold chain to take it off.  She slid it over her head with the intention of placing it on the dressing table, when she heard the sound of something that dropped to the floor….She looked underneath her feet but couldn’t see anything…but then, she noticed a missing pearl from the pendant… “Where is it..? ”  She searched frantically, scanning the floor around  her…It was nowhere in a sight … Joanna got on her knees and started to comb the entire area….no luck…”It couldn’t disappear…” she acknowledge with a cold logic.  Her eyes were searching for any clues about the pearl's location…then, she noticed the empty area underneath large armoire. She looked, but it was too dark to see anything…tried to reach with her hand but found only cobwebs and dust…”One more time...it must be here “  she thought with desperation and reached almost all the way to the back…suddenly, she felt round and smooth object at the edge of her fingertips…”.  I need something  to get it out “  She looked around the room unsure what can she use…nothing… Joanna was kneeling in front of the armoire…” Perfect…. Coat hanger…” She opened the door and found a slim, wooden hanger, pulled it down …reached all the way to the back and started sliding it across the floor….It was giving more resistance that it should…?  There was something else…. The small brown book appeared from under the armoire… looking old and dusty…the pearl was sitting next to it…Joanna picked up the pearl and cleaned it slightly with her shirt…” No damage…” she thought and put it on the dressing table, next to the pendant…”Someone will be able to fix it” she assured herself… She walked back to the armoire and picked up the small, leather book …opened it and found pages filled with handwriting….It was a journal…Joanna closed it …feeling as the trespasser…its private…but who does it belong to…?  One way to find out ….she opened it on the first page to find writing in the beautifully calligraphed letters… "Joanna’s Journal" …. It belonged to her great-grandmother Joanna…who passed away about ten years ago …She turned the first page, not sure if she is allowed to read it… her eyes rested on the first sentence…

” What a glorious day, the world around me is singing with joy….Today, three of us went on the lovely walk…Victoria was picking up flowers and staying in the back of us….I just think she knows…wanted to give us a chance to talk privately…Andrew looked dashingly handsome today, in his grey jacket having even more distinguish look then usual…  His charming smile and complements makes me blush a little more than I want….Felt my face turning red and my breath getting shorter… He has such a profound effect on me… Our conversations are getting more and more informal….He looks into my eyes, making me feel, I am the only girl in the world…Who can resist that..?  Victoria is such a dear friend … today, she had  mischievous look on her face …Can’t wait to see them tomorrow …I was invited for the afternoon tea…I know, he will be there…he just arrived yesterday and usually stays for a few weeks before going back on his business trips…He seems to be more grown up this year…the look of the young boy is almost gone, replaced by the refinement, composure and air of worldliness….I am so happy …

“Joanna…are you going to join us for the lunch…? ”  the Sophie’s voice delivered the invitation, without any doubt of  being accepted.   “ I am on my way…” Joanna closed the journal, scanned the room and decided to put it inside her backpack... She would definitely  like to continue… As she entered the kitchen, the table was set for three of them, grandma and aunt Sophie already sitting. Joanna liked the kitchen…so bright and cheerful with wonderful smells and collection of magical jars…full of raspberries, strawberries, plumbs, orange marmalade…and other things…she never dared to ask. Both of them were very good cooks and took a pride in it… “Sit down Joanna “ her aunt exclaimed. We have you favorite cream of mushroom soup and grandma made crapes for dessert… ” Smells delicious” Joanna joined them at the table and took a big breath in …. “Wonderful” she happily added.  “Just like the old times” grandma said with a little nostalgia in her voice… “Almost….”  Joanna sighted and looked through the window…The silence entered the room and hanged above their heads. “I have some beautiful flowers from the garden …if you want to take it to her…” Sophie spoke with an unusual softness in her voice.” I was there last week …everything looks good and clean…left some fresh flowers…” she added. “Thank you…that’s good….I think I may go there a little later…”  Joanna spoke in a very compose manner. ” Let’s eat...”  grandma suggested and three of them started their lunch.

Joanna’s mom died right after the great-grandma's death …it was a double tragedy for everyone…no one was expecting that… She was still very young…at least in her physical years… Joanna remembers her …always deep in her thoughts…sad …rocking on the chair outside or sleeping in her room for a long time…She was very tender with Joanna …but always tired….especially after Joanna’s father left… She had those terrible headaches and would take some medication for it…sometime one pill…sometime two…it made her more tired and sleepy…Until one day, Sophie found her in the bed …with an empty bottle…It was very difficult for Joanna to understand it when she was a little girl…her mom’s sadness and withdrawal… Now she knew… actually very common… depression…sneaks up on to you, unexpectedly and entangles you in the dark veil… strangling, as you grasp for the air…and then you don’t even need or want an air anymore….you are becoming the island of pain…Joanna watched it from a close distance…trying to help…but with no success…Occasionally she would make her mother laugh with silly jokes and stories…but it didn’t last long…She was always wondering if they could of stop it… and how…  Well, It’s all in the past…

“Who was Victoria? …and Andrew…do you know?”  Joanna asked suddenly…even surprising herself. Grandma and Sophie stopped eating and looked at each other, without giving any sound… “Who told you about them? ”  grandma asked slowly.  “ I know they were friends of great- grandma…”  Joanna paused her voice . “It’s an old story…you shouldn’t worry about it “  grandma said with the conviction… “I just would like to know  ...”  Joanna started breathing in a quick manner... “For once…no more secrets in this house...”  she felt getting angry.  The puzzled looks on woman faces were ridden with tension. “Joanna…” Sophie started…” There are no secrets in this house…I will tell you what I know…” and she turned toward grandmother, giving a slight nod with her head.

“Your great-grandmother’s childhood friends were Victoria and her brother Andrew…Girls, almost grew up together, being the same age …they were  best friends…even though Victoria’s family was very rich and our quite modest. Their parents were always very generous with your great-grandmother…taking her on the trips with them …and treating her like another daughter… Andrew was in the boarding school, most of the time… coming here only for vacation and then, three of them were inseparable trio …They grew up… got older and went separate ways…Their world and your dreat- grandmother’s were very distant….it’s not like today… I think …it was difficult for your great grandma…because she liked the boy…more than a friend…and maybe….he liked her too…but as I said, they were different times…” she finished the long monologue and looked at Joanna with a sad smile…”life is full of little tragedies and heartbreaks…we have to find the reasons to be happy…despite…” she finished and started eating…looking at her plate.

Joanna felt relieved and happy about her aunt sharing this story. She excused herself from the table, took her dishes, quickly washed them and left to dry…” It was an amazing as always…thank you for the lunch…if you don’t mind, I will rest for a few minutes...” she looked at them hoping for an approval. “By all means, rest as much as you want child “  Her aunt exclaimed. Joanna left the kitchen and started walking toward the bedroom…thinking about her great- grandmother’s diary …

She lay down on the bed and opened the journal….turned few pages and started reading randomly…

”Next week is the opening ball of the season ….Victoria and I, cannot simply wait anymore, we are sixteen this year and everything will change….Victoria’s mom had a dress made for me for that occasion…just like for Victoria…can’t wait to wear it… and Andrew will be there….my heart is skipping a beat, just thinking about him…He was very mysterious last time ….and said, he has a surprise gift for me…how exiting…I will cherish it forever…He didn’t want to say what it was…but Victoria …sneaked up on him and noticed a pendant…blue …she wasn’t sure, but it looked like a moonstone… “

Joanna jumped out of the bed and raced to the dresser taking a hold of her moonstone pendant….”Is it a coincidence? “  She thought … “or is she holding her great –grandmother’s pendant …?  But how is it possible….? ” Joanna walked back to the bed, looking at her pendant…fell into the softness of the pillows and stared at the ceiling….She imagined her great-grandma Joanna….writing in her journal…happy about the ball and in love with Andrew….It seems, like it happened just yesterday…she closed her eyes for a moment…will her life be just a moment in human’s history?  Will she ever love like that? Would anybody from a future ever wonder about her …who she was and how she felt…?  `We are nothing…but shooting stars…she thought….better wish for something... fast…before it’s gone……

To be continued...

The Little Prince

"People where you live," the little prince said, "grow five thousand roses in one garden... yet they don't find what they're looking for..."

"They don't find it," I answered.

"And yet what they're looking for could be found in a single rose, or a little water..."

"Of course," I answered.

And the little prince added, "But eyes are blind. You have to look with the heart."
