“Look at this bird…its quite big….” Joanna was pointing above her head toward the sky…the silhouette of a large bird, flying impressively grabbed her attention…”What is it?  Do you know by any chance….is it an eagle….?”  She asked, focusing on the bird. “I think it looks more…like a Falcon…see ...it has a long pointed wings and ….look! Look! How quickly it changes directions…” Christopher was watching the flight of the bird with his head tilted backwards… “It is fast…” Joanna exclaimed…  “Yes, they are….one of the fastest birds with an excellent vision…quite amazing…”  Christopher agreed nodding his head and looking at Joanna. He couldn’t stop thinking about her since he saw her this morning…She was very attractive…but that’s not what made him interested in her…She was … natural…the way she talk, act, dress, laugh…not presumptuous  at all…kind and sweet…He was hoping to see her over this weekend in Eau Claire…but after few hours decided to take the matter into his own hands…and went to …find out …who she was…Mr. Ashcroft, from the local convenience store knew everyone in town…he was his first choice to begin a little investigation…It didn’t take him long to come up with the answer…She was the  niece of Miss Sophie Blanch …and would visit her grandma and aunt quite often. Her name was Joanna and she was studying to become a teacher…According to Mr. Ashcroft she was a lovely girl….and still single…Christopher thought, that a little walk could never hurt anybody….so he started walking toward a general direction…of her aunt’s house…just..Hoping for …a little luck from the universe… He hardly made any progress, just to see Joanna walking toward the train station, holding colorful flowers, deeply drawn into her thoughts…She was walking slowly…not looking around…and not aware of the coming train…Christopher blinked few times, trying to erase the scary memory...He looked at her face, as she was admiring the flight of the falcon. He couldn’t believe how close it was for something terrible to happen… It doesn’t take much…especially when you are daydreaming…and he had a distinctive impression…that’s something she was good at… Maybe that’s what he liked the most about her…a dreamer…in her own world. Would she be willing to share this world with him ?…He was interested to find out, what is she thinking about …and if she likes him…a little…

Joanna looked at the Christopher, feeling he is observing her with concentration… His eyes were asking a question…she wasn’t sure exactly which question…but she knew, that he likes her…She smiled and said “It’s getting late and I am a little thirsty …I should be going soon…” Christopher got up and helped her to stand up…” I live just few minutes from here…we can stop, get something to drink and I will walk you home...” he suggested. “Are you sure..?” she asked surprised “Yes 100% positive” Christopher replied. Both of them started making their way down, toward the town. Christopher didn’t exaggerate, his house was very close.

It was a large, colonial style two story red brick house with huge white entry doors and maybe about eight windows with jet black shutters. Looking very impressive and well taken care of. “It’s a nice house” Joanna exclaimed with a smile. “Yes…its quite old too…I used to be afraid…when I was just a little boy…to get lost …”  “Not any more...I hope so” Joanna joked a little… Christopher gave her a serious look and said…” No, not anymore….but I think this house has life on its own…all noises…at night…I guess, it’s just old...”

“What would you like to drink? “  He asked  “Just anything would be good…water is fine”  Joanna said in a relaxed tone of voice. Christopher led her to a large room, which looked like family room …except really big and full of art work. “Do you want to sit down..? I will be right back with something to drink “  he pointed to the antique looking sofa with lots of pillows.  “ Thank you “  Joanna agreed, walked over to the sofa and sat in the middle. She was looking around the room, admiring charming furniture, paintings on the walls and sculptures. She liked the look of the room…it was decorated with a good taste and artistic hand…Joanna noticed the sculpture of the blind- folded women holding a set of scales in one hand and a sword in the other. Joanna got up and moved closer to get a better look…it was a beautiful statue…she touched it with the admiration… “It’s Themis...Goddess of Justice “ She heard Christopher’s voice behind her…  “Quite an enchanting sculpture “  she exclaimed… Christopher handed her a crystal glass with a water  “Mineral water…? “  He asked   “Perfect”  she responded.  “Would you like a tour of the house? “  Christopher had a questioning look on his face. “That would be nice…”

They started walking through the numerous rooms in the house…All she knew….it was many of them…very interesting, alluring or simply lovely… very  captivating to see this well preserved world… As she was passing by one of the rooms …she noticed a painting of two young women, dressed in a simple dresses…holding bouquets of wild flowers and smiling happily. She though …they look somehow familiar… Joanna pointed to this painting, hunging all the way across the room and asked… ”Family…?”    “Yes….my great-grandma …I mean the one on the left…” Christopher answered.  Joanna looked closer at the painting…fixing her eyes on the woman on the right…she looked like her…… “What was your great – grandmother’s name..?”  She asked, without taking her eyes of the painting.  “It was Margaret…”  he said slowly… Joanna let the breath out ….” No…I am sorry …that’s my aunt Margaret…my great- grandma’s name was Victoria…”  he corrected himself... Joanna started walking toward the painting…realizing the woman on the right was her great-grandma Joanna…she noticed something in the middle of her chest…shimmering…blue…The pendant was there….exactly the same as hers…It was her great- grandma and next to her Victoria….yes, the blue eyes…She abruptly turned around ….just to find the same eyes looking at her …..Christopher….he is Victoria’s great grandson….” What’s wrong” he asked in a concern voice.  Joanna was speechless the whole world started spinning around and she felt weak ….

Victoria was sitting at the desk…but she was not writing anymore…She was looking at Joanna and smiling ….She gestured  to come closer….Joanna wasn’t sure….but moved toward the desk.  Victoria was holding the moonstone pendant with pearl…exactly the same Joanna had at home…She looked into Joanna’s eyes and reached for her hand.  Victoria placed the pendant in the palm of Joanna’s hand and then closed her fingers over it…

“She is coming back” Joanna heard the woman’s voice and felt something cold on her forehead…She opened her eyes and saw Christopher, leaning over her with a distraught look in his eyes…they were…blue…or maybe green…she couldn’t tell…. “ You fainted” Christopher explained… “How often does it happen to you ? “he asked… “Never….I don’t think I ever fainted before...” she said slowly…trying to make any sense out of it… “ You were looking at the painting and then….”  “ Yes,   I remember….” she nodded her head.  “ No more questions!...let her rest…” the woman with the friendly face exclaimed with confidence. Joanna turned her head to the left, facing her and  introduced herself…” My name is Joanna…” The woman nodded ... “ I know your aunt Sophie very well…and your family too….” She said it with a smile.  “ Christopher told me what happened today…with a train…” she stated  and turned toward Christopher  “ You shouldn’t be taking her for a walk …” and she shook her head with the disapproval.  “It’s all right…I enjoyed the walk… “Joanna said with a smile and looked at the Christopher.  “I see…” the woman smiled and extended her hand toward Joanna  “My name is Clara …I am Christopher’s aunt”  Joanna shook her hand and said  “Pleasure meeting you Clara…I am sorry, it’s under such  a circumstances…”  “Better now, then never...” Clara exclaimed.  “Can I ask you a question about that painting…” Joanna said and turned around looking for it… “You mean the one you fainted in front of…” Clara asked, squinting her eyes. “Yes…the one with Victoria in it and another woman …wearing the moonstone pendant” Joanna explained promptly. “What do you want to know about it?” Clara asked looking straight into her eyes. “Who is the other woman …in the painting…?”  Joanna’s face looked determined “  I think you know the answer...”  Clara said slowly… ” It’s your great-grandmother Joanna…and she is wearing the pendant given to her by Andrew…” “What happened with this pendant?” Joanna asked with trembling voice. Clara looked at her cautiously…” … After Andrew got engaged and moved away…Joanna didn’t want to see anyone from Andrew’s family…including Victoria…She gave back the pendant to Victoria ….saying she doesn’t want any memories of Andrew or even Victoria…. I’ve heard from my mother the story how Victoria desperately tried to apologize and continue their friendship ….but your great- grandma send back all the letters…unopened….After Victoria’s death, my mother tried to return the pendant to your great- grandmother family, according to Victoria’s wishes….but …they decline….Then, I don’t know what happened to it…I guess it was lost…” she finished, looking worried. Christopher was a little confused….” Do you mean that’s your great- grandmother…on this painting..?” he asked with a puzzled expression.  “Yes…I believe so…” Joanna answered …looking straight into his eyes.  “That’s why you fainted?”  he was trying to understand.  “It’s more to it …I…I was having some dreams lately…about…your great-grandmather…Victoria…”  she admitted quietly  “Dreams..? About my great- grandmother..?”  Christopher wrinkled his forehead…and bit his lower lip…  “I know…I know it sounds crazy…but that’s true…It all happened, since I bought her pendant…”  “You have Victoria’s…I mean your great grandmother’s moonstone pendant?”  Clara raised her eyebrows with surprise. “ Yes…I do…and then the pearl got lost …under the armoire…and I found her diary…My great grandmother diary…That’s how I knew about Victoria, Andrew and my great-grandmother….”  Joanna felt…uncomfortable….” I think I’d better go now…”  she looked unsure.  “It’s incredible story…but life is full of magic and unexplained things….” Clara looked into the distance “ We can’t explain some occurrences …or analyze it with a logic …we have to believe someone’s else hand orchestrated it…Having  faith, is one of  the most important factors  in our life….without it, we will reduce ourselves only  to our senses and our mind….and I always believed, there is more to us then that….We all make a choice, everyday and every minute in what kind of world we want to live…it’s up to us and our choice of perception…to embrace or throw away…certain ideas.” Clara paused and looked at the Joanna with a gentle smile  “Its my choice and I choose to have  faith in destiny that brought you here…Victoria’s last wish…perfect time to heal and time to forgive….”

Joanna smiled and gave Clara the look which said “Thank you”…… “I have to go now…” she said and got up quickly …walking toward the stairs… “Wait for me…you are not going anywhere without my help...” Christopher proclaimed with conviction.  Joanna glanced at Clara, who was quietly nodding …and smiling, looking at the Christopher with approval. “I would love this very much…” Joanna exclaimed and took his hand… She turned around, facing Clara and said  “ I choose to believe …it was destiny that brought us all together…life has a funny way  of repeating itself…giving us a chance to try it again… all we need, is to open our hearts and trust the big picture….She turned around and asked Christopher “ Ready..?”  “ Like never before...” he smiled and looked at her with those blue eyes with golden speckles…

The End.

The Little Prince

"People where you live," the little prince said, "grow five thousand roses in one garden... yet they don't find what they're looking for..."

"They don't find it," I answered.

"And yet what they're looking for could be found in a single rose, or a little water..."

"Of course," I answered.

And the little prince added, "But eyes are blind. You have to look with the heart."
