Snowflakes 2 81st Day 03-22

The week went by very quickly…Sophie tried to keep busy with her school work, not allowing extra free time for melancholy or regrets… One of Allan’s friends offered to drive to the nearby mountains. Sophie loved to ski since she was a child. The smell of the fresh snow, adventure of finding the best way down the mountain and the silence, broken by your own heartbeat and skis making a turn…was magical. She didn’t like to take the same route all the time…but to explore and find unexpected terrain …

They made it on time for the afternoon skiing. Two of the girls decided to stay at home and ski the following day. The weather was not bad for December but it was snowing a little and the visibility was limited. Allan, Margie, Paul and Sophie were able to get tickets for a cable car, taking them high in the mountains…once there, they would use local, smaller lifts. Sophie looked through the window of the cable car…they were climbing higher and higher, getting closer to a massive rocks …looking majestic and scary…Snow covered everything… branches of trees were slanting down under  the heavy load….looked beautiful and asleep in the icy kingdom. The fresh and pure allure of the crystal white scenery brought a peaceful feeling. Sophie was looking forward to skiing, ready to let her body become part of the mountain terrain, responding to sudden hills, mounds, dips and turns. It was a conversation between the skier and the snowy mountain…First few runs were like a beginning of a friendship…getting to know each other …then real fun begin with putting a little imagination and spirit of adventure …to keep playing the exhilarating game…  They did few runs, trying to keep together…the snow was beginning to be a little icy…nothing unusual for this time of the year and late afternoon hour. The time on the cold lift, reminded her of the turtle …going inside its own shell…No one talked …it was too cold, everyone tried to stay warm and preserve the energy…Sophie had a silly game …when she felt really cold…She imagined herself on the hot sandy beach…where sun was making everyone warm and sweaty… It worked…her body responded to that image …not shivering anymore…at least for next 30 sec.

By the time they reach the icy, windy top of the mountains…they had only one thought on their mind…to move…as in a matter of life and death… After dozen or so turns …the temperature didn’t seems so freezing… Sophie stopped and turned around looking for Allan and Margie. She was very nice girl but not the best skier….and Allan was helping her to keep up with the group. The other boy was standing slightly below her …also waiting for them…Sophie was getting cold…Paul signaled for her to come closer. She made two turns and sharply stopped next to him. Paul took of his ski mask and pointed to the middle of the mountain toward silhouettes of two skiers…Allan and Margie…” It will take them another 10 minutes….why don’t we wait for them at the bottom…its getting really cold…what do you think?” he asked.  Sophie looked at the mountains…Allan and Margie were doing fine…just skiing very slowly…. “They will be all right…Allan is a good skier …he knows his way around “she thought and nodded her head…letting him know they can go… Her fingers felt frozen …she has to move… They started skiing...Paul  was leading the way …she could see his body working hard on the icy surface…Sophie had a good skis …but still had to concentrate not to fall…she was too light for extreme icy conditions…Felt the burning in the muscles from intensity…Paul was just a little in front of her…they need to take a sharp right turn close to the trees…soon…”Where is he going….he is too far to the left”…she started skiing faster to catch up …but Paul already turned left going to unknown destination…and passing the way to the bottom…Sophie stopped for a moment at the fork of the trails…looking to the right…leading her to the safe bottom…and then quickly turned left…she can’t leave him by himself…She was skiing the completely new terrain…of the trail…the rocks begin to show more and more and the falling snow made it almost impossible to see anything. She still couldn’t see the Paul…where is he?  There he was...on the right, standing next to huge bulldozers and trees. She knew they are in trouble… “We missed the turn...” he said with worried expression . Sophie nodded…” Have you ever ski ...here before…” she asked calmly.  “No…” he answered and asked her “and you…?”   Sophie shook her head as a” no” for the answer…” It’s too far and snow is too deep …we can’t climb back…” she exclaimed finally. “We have to keep moving and make it somehow to the bottom” she tried to smile …” It will be all right…lets go …” she moved by him taking a lead toward the steep bottom… “Nice and slow with control…” she thought to herself…  The rocks were large and you had to make quick turns to maneuver around….They were going down…but …it was getting late and they were not sure …where they are…. They made it around area covered with rocks and had in front of them forest with virgin snow…No one was skiing through here …at least …today…  She was tired, looked back at Paul who gave her thumbs up signal…She started trailing through the deep snow….it will take them a while …at least not feeling cold anymore…too much work… She was breathing hard…stopped to wait for Paul …who looked tired too… Sophie has been skiing since she was 5 and she knew…they have to keep moving….

It took them probably 2 hours to get through the deep snow in the forest…they were exhausted and completely wet…It was already dark…Sophie saw something below them on the right side…it looked like a building….old, wooden and unused chalet….in the middle of nowhere… “Thank you God” she thought…She turned to Paul and pointed toward the little house…”we have to stay…it’s our only chance….the temperature is dropping quickly…” she exclaimed…Paul…wasn’t sure….” We will freeze here….” He said…” No! We will freeze out there ….let’s go!!” she said and started skiing toward the building. …Paul followed….she turned around once….making sure he is behind her….Sophie knew she will spend the night here …. No matter what….

The chalet was small, old and not used in a while …but there were visible signs that someone was camping here…probably in the summer… There was the lantern and they were able to light it up, couple of dry, cold blankets and fireplace…no wood … small pantry with some cans …no can opener…They will be good for a night …then in the morning…have to start moving….Paul was very quiet …” Are you all right? “Sophie asked with concern “Sorry about the mess I got you into…missed that stupid turn…”he exclaimed looking at her with guilt… “It’s all right…don’t worry …we are safe now…that’s all that matters…We will be fine…”she assured him. “Let’s see what else we can find in this place” she said. They were able to find few bottles of beer and the bottle of vodka…better than nothing… Paul discovered wood in the back and managed to start the fire; they undressed from wet clothes and wrapped themselves in the blankets…. It was still very cold…they opened up the vodka taking a big sips out of the bottle…looked at each other and started laughing for the very first time since they missed  the turn… Sophie looked at the Paul and said…” I know you just planned all of this to get me to cuddle with you….let’s do it then...For the sake of our surviving”  They laughed and cuddled , taking more sips of vodka…The small fire was warming up the room very slowly…

Sophie was thinking how silly she was to worry about the future, and how stupid of her to break up with Michael…just because she was afraid they would hurt each other …and fail at the relationship... One small wrong turn…bad weather conditions and she may not have any future ahead of her….Why is she trying to control everything in the hope it will work out…the way she will plan… We can’t control everything…weather, human mistakes, feelings…Every day as we wake up we take our chances….every day is a miracle and every evening we should be grateful to be here. Instead of worrying of what else can happen…we should just live each day to the fullest…Don’t let the fear take the best out of us…if we fail at something at least we tried… When the relationship is not working anymore…be happy it did…for a while…nothing is permanent in this world…Sophie realized she doesn’t want to live her life on the sidelines…she wants to be right in the middle of the game…out of breath and giving it all she has to give…Cry and laugh…hope and despair…love and long …she wants to feel alive every moment with no regrets and safeguarding…She was feeling warm right now…and sure more than ever how much she missed him…Sophie looked at the Paul and saw him glazing at the fire….It seemed, that he was thinking about something…very intensely… “ You never know…one day you are on the top of the world and next…could be your last..” he said it taking a deep breath and turning toward Sophie…” I am glad we found this place and stayed….”he smiled …” Me too” Sophie agreed.

The silence felt between them, each of them buried in its own thoughts…learning unexpected lesson and planning different approach…They felt grateful for each other company…acutely sensing the change in them… much happier now then this morning…surprised by simple discovery of forgotten meaning to every day… every minute or breath taken….

They woke up on the floor, next to the fireplace, cuddling to each other, holding an empty bottle of vodka… The day was nice and bright without snowing….they dressed up and made their way all the way to the bottom….They were maybe an hour away from the first occupied buildings…. Somehow, despite spending the night on the wooden floor…in the cold…they felt happy and refresh…

Sophie couldn’t wait to call Michael and…take a chance …without logic, planning or calculation…spend some time together and enjoy it to the fullest… Tell her family, how much she loves them, friends how much she cares for them …even Plato…how much she enjoys him…Life is, a you see  Life….choice belongs to you…

The Little Prince

"People where you live," the little prince said, "grow five thousand roses in one garden... yet they don't find what they're looking for..."

"They don't find it," I answered.

"And yet what they're looking for could be found in a single rose, or a little water..."

"Of course," I answered.

And the little prince added, "But eyes are blind. You have to look with the heart."
