The Yellow Dragon 60th Day 03-01

by Administrator 1. March 2011 05:34

The little boy was concentrating his full attention on flying a kite. His head was leaning slightly to the back with his eyes transfixed on the gliding movement of the yellow dragon. Today was the perfect day for this activity…there was enough wind to get the kite off the ground but not too much to get it destroyed. Mark was thrilled with the idea of coming to the beach and finally trying out his new kite. He was a slim, twelve year old boy with full head of unruly, curly light brown hair and the delicate face with lively green eyes. The wind picked up some strength and Mark began releasing more string to accommodate climbing to higher altitude. The kite was flying majestically, trailing its impressive golden tail in a set of graceful movements.  “What do you think …Can I get it higher?”  Mark asked with the excitement in his voice, not taking his eyes, even for a moment of the yellow kite. “You can try…but it may escape…I don’t know much about the kites…” the soft spoken voice belonged to a pretty, young woman with very curly brown hair and a delicate features. “ Mom…I think I can get it higher!! “Mark’s face was determined and ready for challenge.  “Try it then!!!!” she called out, speaking louder, over increasing sound of the wind… Mark gave her quick, mischievous look and started running toward the ocean, suddenly turning away and changing direction…. The kite lost all of its power and begun spinning out of control…in the last attempt to save it from crushing and getting wet, Mark started pulling on the string as fast as he could… It helped to slow down its dramatic flight …but the unexpected landing was inevitable. The yellow dragon landed not far away from them and Mark sprinted into that direction, gently picking it up and looking anxiously ….”It’s going to be fine…nothing broken…” shouted with an excitement and let a big smile take over his face.

The week at school, started as usual. Mark was a very bright student but on occasions accused of too much day dreaming. He could hardly wait for his English class… This year, they had a new teacher at school and Mark liked him a lot. He didn’t look like a typical teacher…more of the well build athlete with a strong features and a proud look on his face. Mr. Pearl was very particular, paying attention to the smallest details, demanding focus and excellence in his class. He was an exceptional scholar…highly knowledgeable, passionate about his job and always willing to give his time freely to help the students. The only one requirement for his class was to fully participate in the body, mind and spirit….which turned out to be quite challenging.  Mark enjoyed literature and writing, it helped him a lot since his father passed away ….It was able to take him, from painful reality and to offer an exciting world, full of possibilities, dreams, magical stories and hopes…He loved reading variety of books but his favorite stories involved anything with dragons…that totally magical world, where honor, strength, noble cause worth fighting for and a goodness prevailing over evil were at the core of the storytelling… Mr. Pearl walked to the class carrying the air, of his usual powerful and positive personality. His energy was evident and contagious…” Good morning class”, he stated shortly …” “How was your weekend? I am hoping to hear some interesting stories ….that’s your assignment for today …free style writing…You have an hour …Good luck to everyone” and he sat down at his desk, took out some papers to grade and let the concentrated look spread over his face.

Mark was sitting for a moment in front of the empty piece of paper, considering different subjects and finally deciding  to just start writing….letting his hand curry the motion , initiated deep down in his soul , unaware of its own existence and not susceptible to judgment… The story of the yellow dragon kite started to fill out the paper, taking on the life of its own, breathing in the emotions, thoughts and pictures to complete the intricate puzzle. Promising to entertain and amuse, before departure…. Mark though it was a perfect and very suitable subject for today’s writing…after all, he won last month contest and was given the prize…. Mr. Pearl always kept his promises…and rewarded his students with small gift, for writing a contest. Mark won it last month…it was a story about sea and a man lost …during the storm….finally making it home to his family…That’s what he wrote….didn’t have much decision about that….the story was inside of him for some time...waiting for the perfect moment…His father died last year…when his fishing boat was turned over during unexpected mega storm….only few pieces were recovered… Mark changed the ending in his story….he wanted to see it, if only on the paper….his father coming home…good ending….. Mr. Pearl chose his story to be awarded and brought him the prize…big yellow dragon kite…. Simply splendid in its beauty….

Mark was riding his bike to school every morning with an exception of bad weather…His mom would make him his favorite breakfast of blueberry pancakes and send him off to school with big kiss and long hug. She was trying to be very brave, but Mark knew how much she missed his father….he was watching her, looking at the sea with anger, sadness and resentment. Mark  was very deep in his thoughts and he didn’t immediately notice two of the older boys from the same school , following him home and  starting to make inappropriate  remarks about him being a “mama’s boy”….Mark was too smart to fall for this…they just wanted to fight… He started pedaling a little faster in hope, to make it home before full blown confrontation… In the past, he came back on few occasions with a bruised face….apologizing for being clumsy and falling of the bike…. They were getting closer, despite his attempt to run away…’”Hey… Mama’s boy, why are you running away…scared..?” the tall boy with a touch of stutter exclaimed…laughing nervously….  The other boy, build like a tank, passed him on the left side and  suddenly stopped, blocking his way….” The end of the road “he said, looking at the Mark… ” You are getting faster and faster….” he started chuckling…” “We can hardly keep up with you...”  Mark was not afraid anymore…he knew the drill…it will hurt a little and then, will be over…he was waiting for the first punch… He just wished, not on his face…too visible…his  mother was concern about him falling of his bike or getting hurt in other peculiar accidents…and the last time almost went to the school to talk to the principal…  “ I don’t have any money today”  Mark firmly stated… The other boys started laughing … ’’ Who said anything about the money…’’ they said it clearly, accentuating the last word….”Then, what do you want from me..? Take a good aim...I got use to it…” and he looked at them with stubborn determination… “ Take it easy we don’t want to fight with you…we want to be friends…”   the heavy boy exclaimed…   “Friends…?”    Mark was watching them with suspicious disbelief on his face….  “Yes… we are planning a little boat trip…and we thought we will invite you with us…unless…you are afraid”  …the silence of the last sentence entered the space between them….  “I don’t want to go on the trip’’   Mark said slowly….The  tall one grabbed him by his shirt and pulled him toward his face…  “Chi…chi chicken…?”  he stumbled….

“What do we have here? “   the thunderous voice came out of nowhere…. It was Mr. Pearl appearing suddenly and giving them serious and upset look….  “Are you boys having some problems?”  he asked and looked at the two older boys…   “No…no problems at all, we were just talking …and now we need to go, it is getting late….goodbye Mr. Pearl …”  they picked up their bikes and left… Mark felt humiliated…he turned around to say thank you to Mr. Pearl for his intervention….just to see, two of the boys signaling something …and saying “ Don’t forget our trip …tomorrow at eight at the dock…”   ….His teacher turned around to take a second look at the other boys but they were already on their way..Laughing ….

“What is this all about “  Mr. Pearl asked…  ” How long, were they bothering you  ?“  Mark turned toward his bike and picked it up slowly off the ground….” Not that long…it started…sometime last year “ he said reluctantly….

“Do you want me to talk to your mom about it ? “  his teacher asked with the concern voice…  “ No…please no !!!...she has enough troubles…” Mark exclaimed  passionately.... ” Then.....let me walk you home “  Mr. Pearl picked up the back pack and both of them started to walk toward Mark’s home…

Mark’s  mom saw them from a distance and run outside with worried look on her face… “ Are you all right? What happened?”  she asked…The moment of the silence preceded the assuring voice of Mr. Pearl…” Mark had some problems with his bike and I happened to be around…so… “  He looked at the Mark’s Mom with surprise and …after a pause he asked “  Are you working in the library…because your face seems familiar..?” She smiled in response and nodded her head “Yes…that’s me…I know who you are….Thank you for taking good care of Mark…he …I mean   I appreciate it…”    Mr. Pearl looked into her green eyes…clearly as beautiful as sad…and said quickly…” Mark is a very talented student, it’s my pleasure...I enjoy having him in my class” he smiled …faintly and almost embarrassed …. Then he left suddenly, mumbling  “ Goodbye…I mean goodnight”...

Mark couldn’t sleep all night long... he was tossing and turning and having a nightmare involving him and those boys…boat and his yellow dragon kite…He woke up, sweating and screaming…”Not my kite…” Then he managed to fall asleep and dreamed about this sea monster , which looked like a serpent…except it was not a monster in his dream…It reminded him of his dragon…yellow...almost gold , helping him and chasing away the boys on bicycles …and Mr. Pearl….looking at them in a worried look… When the alarm rang to wake him up for school …he was not sure what was a dream and what the reality… He remembered clearly  the confrontation with two older boys and sighted heavily , knowing it’s not over yet… he didn’t want to involve anybody else…he will meet them for the boat trip…show them he is not afraid and maybe finally finish the game of cat and mouse…. The truth is, he was a little afraid of the water and ocean …since his father’s death….he wasn’t on the boat since then….

The classes in the school flew by…the day seemed awfully short…now, that he was wishing  just opposite….The time is the funny thing…never the same….Mr. Pearl watched him during his class but didn’t say a word… Mark was trying not to make an eye contact with him in fear, he will see through him…and stop the evening plans. Mark was determined to settle it once and forever. He showed up at the docks, quarter to eight…nobody was there ...it was unusually quiet today… The two boys arrived shortly… “ Ready for a trip? “  they asked… “ I am …”  Mark said with determination.  “Let’s go then”…they pushed their way, pass  him and started leading toward one of the smallest boats… The tall one started untying the rope, as the other looked at the Mark and said “ You first”…. Mark got into the boat…waiting for them to join him ….but they didn’t make any movements… ” Are we going or not ? ”  Mark asked… “ You are going!...Who said anything about us..?”  and they started laughing.. Mark looked at them and said...” Then I am not going too…It’s getting late and it looks like it’s going to rain soon...” and he made an attempt to step off the small boat... The boys blocked his way out and said…” You go …for about 10 minutes one way and then come back…and we will be even ...no more  missing lunch money and falling of the bike…”

Mark sit down …he knew …that’s the only way…he started the engine and soon was on his way toward the sea…Just 10 minutes…ten minutes is not long…. Mark was trying to convince himself not to worry… The wind picked up slightly and he felt few cold drops of the rain…I can do it…I can do it…I know….It got dark so quickly that, he was surprised ….the boat started rocking a little too much, as the wind was getting stronger… How many more minutes…?  Mark asked himself…Has it been already ten…? The wind was strong and the small boat was dangerously rocking from side to side… I am turning back…he decided...He steer the boat, turned around and started heading back…it was raining…The heavy, cold rain was covering the waters, making it difficult to see anything… Mark was beginning to feel scared…he wasn’t even sure …he was heading the right direction …..The thunder sounded  to the right of the boat…startling him…he was shaking from the cold and trying to stay on the course, at the same time…All of sudden, he felt the boat tilting heavily to the left and felt losing his balance … the next thing he knew...he was in the icy cold water…desperately fighting for his life…He tried to swim to the shore..but didn’t know which way….the boat was gone…disappeared from the side …He was all alone…in the dark , shivering from cold and getting immensely tired with every second….the water was getting into his mouth…he was coughing and trying to swim…no one will hear his cry for help...no one… He felt, as he couldn’t move anymore, his whole body was tired…maybe he can rest for a while …he was under the water …feeling peaceful...away from the storm and the rain…then....he felt someone touching his shoulder…He turned around,  and saw the face of  his father next to him…looking  with the sad expression….Mark wanted to swim to him and hug him…but he couldn’t move…he extended his right hand toward him, as if trying to reach ….but….he couldn’t….. In the same moment, he felt something big  and fast grabbing him with an enormous force and sweeping him away in the dramatic movements…He felt, as if he was drifting farther and farther away….with his body in the possession of the sea monster….Mark looked behind him just to see enormous yellow tail with gold speckles….then, he looked down and saw muscular and powerful legs with five distinctive toes….it looked to him like…his yellow dragon…

Mark slowly opened his eyes and saw his mother looking at him and crying…. She kissed him and he heard another voice saying…he will be fine…but he was one lucky boy… It’s scary to think what would have happen, If Mr. Pearl didn’t act so quickly… Mark was trying to remember what happened ….he looked at his mom and wanted to say  .... sorry….”I saw him !! ”  Mark said….  “My Dad….and then the yellow dragon saved me …he saved my life!!”   His mom touched his hand and removed the lock of curly brown hair ….from his forehead… “Mark “  she said “ .Mr. Pearl saved you…” and she turned her head to the other side of the bed…Mark followed her with his eyes ….His teacher was standing on the other side of the hospital bed….smiling and watching him intensely… “Everything will be all right from now on…you don’t have to worry….the most important you are alive and safe…..” Mark watched his face carefully and then said…”Thank you for ….saving me…” Mr. Pearl smiled and put something small into the palm of his hand and closed it…. He moved closer to Mark’s face and whispered to his ear….” Yes…He saved you…”  Mark brought his hand toward his face and looked at the object he was holding….It was a miniature statue of the yellow dragon…with distinctively visible five toes…and a long gold tail….exactly the way Mark remembered it……

The Little Prince

"People where you live," the little prince said, "grow five thousand roses in one garden... yet they don't find what they're looking for..."

"They don't find it," I answered.

"And yet what they're looking for could be found in a single rose, or a little water..."

"Of course," I answered.

And the little prince added, "But eyes are blind. You have to look with the heart."
