The Space Between Time 134th Day 05-14

She wanted to feel again…the emptiness and silence took over her personal space. The life seemed to be indifferent…no sadness or joy, exhilaration or regrets, care or worries…”perfect” nothingness…Alice closed her eyes for a moment, concentrating on her heart beat….Yes, she was still alive…at least in the physical sense.

The sharp sound of the horn, coming from the car behind her, awakened her from her dreamy stage.   The traffic lights changed to green … slowly, she took her foot of the brake, placed it on the accelerator and started to drive. Her car was moving across the intersection at the very slow pace…Alice  watched the scene around her….filled with cars passing by and people walking on the sidewalks…everything looked strange, reminding her of  the slow motion movie unfolding in front of her eyes. She took the deep breath in, feeling her chest expand in the attempt to get rid of a painful tightness around her ribs.

Alice reached for the radio, turning it on and then impatiently tuning into different stations…Music always made her feel alive, vibrating with life, energy, happiness, melancholy, little sadness or joy…but not this time…She heard the sounds …but they were not capable of penetrating her body…or reaching her soul…

” What a peculiar state “she thought to herself. Her detachment from the world of the senses and emotions was something she had never experienced before. It didn’t hurt …it just made her numb and very quiet on the inside.

It’s been already two weeks since she’s decided to walk away, gathering enough energy and courage to brake the self destructing cycle of this relationship.  She packed her bag and took the last look at the place she called home for past two years…Jake was still asleep…his body full of cheap liquor …

He looked almost like a little boy…with his head covered in golden brown curls…innocent and peaceful… Alice stood there, for what it felt like the longest moment in her life …watching him breath … then turned around and started to walk toward the door…catching a glimpse of her reflection in the large mirror on the wall…Her left eye was red and swollen…already taking on a purplish hue…She put her sunglasses on and quietly closed the door behind.

Her thoughts were interrupted by the sight of a coffee shop, where she has been working for past few days.  Megan, one of  her close friends  she was staying with, knew the owner of this small place…and helped her to get a job. She was grateful for that… it forced her to get out of the bed, make some money…and figure out …what to do with her life…As she opened the door leading to the shop, she was greeted by a jovial…

“Good Morning…my dear…How are you today?”  The heavy set woman in her thirties with a big smile across her face was looking at Alice with anticipation.

“Good Morning Margaret…I am fine...How are you today?” Alice answered forcing a smile on her face.

“I am great…Thank you for asking” Margaret replied with a twinkle of laughter in her voice.

Alice looked at her boss with an interest, sensing her warmth and vibrant energy, pointed to the back of the shop and mumbled “I will quickly change…be right back”.

Margaret just smiled and nodded her head in agreement. Alice walked to the back, put  on her apron and pushed the door wide open…Another day…

To be continued…

The Little Prince

"People where you live," the little prince said, "grow five thousand roses in one garden... yet they don't find what they're looking for..."

"They don't find it," I answered.

"And yet what they're looking for could be found in a single rose, or a little water..."

"Of course," I answered.

And the little prince added, "But eyes are blind. You have to look with the heart."
